Top tips to keep you and your loved ones safe this Christmas.
On the 1st day of Christmas…
Take care when cooking Christmas dinner. Remember to keep your hands, utensils and surfaces clean to avoid cross contamination and never leave cooking unattended. Cooking under the influence of alcohol and substances should be avoided to prevent fires or danger to your health and that of your loved ones.
On the 2nd day of Christmas…
Keep your tree, decorations and wrapping paper away from any heat sources. Dispose of wrapping and packaging properly and take bagged waste out to bin stores as soon as possible, to reduce the risk of a fire starting. Visit www.trivallis.co.uk/bin-collection to find your collection dates.
On the 3rd day of Christmas…
When selecting Christmas decorations, choose those that are labelled fire resistant/retardant and, if possible, opt for an artificial tree over a real tree. If you do use a real tree, make sure it is well watered. Not only will this help it stay fresh and green for longer, it will also prevent it from becoming dry and an increased fire hazard.
On the 4th day of Christmas…
Use electrical equipment safely and make sure you do not overload extension leads. Check your Christmas lights are in good condition and unplug when not in use.
On the 5th day of Christmas…
Take care of yourself and others. Check in on vulnerable neighbours over the holiday period, as it’s a time where people can feel loneliness the most. If you feel lonely, reach out to neighbours or loved ones for a friendly chat or reach out for support.
On the 6th day of Christmas…
When using candles, make sure they are placed on a stable surface. Always extinguish them when leaving a room or going to bed and keep them away from any decorations. Try to use battery operated candles where possible as these are a safer alternative.
On the 7th day of Christmas…
Stay vigilant, be aware of rogue traders and scam calls. Never let someone into your home that you are unsure about and always ask for ID. If you are in immediate danger call 999 or call 101 to report a nuisance caller.
On the 8th day of Christmas…
If you’re doing a big clean in your home in preparation for Christmas, make sure to check your lint drawers in your tumble/washer dryer and remove any build up that could become a fire risk. Each time you use your dryer, please remember to check.
On the 9th day of Christmas…
Keep Christmas treats away from pets as they can be harmful and poisonous to them, especially chocolate.
On the 10th day of Christmas…
Take care of yourself. Take some time to craft, bake or create art as a way of grounding. It’s a technique that helps you to focus on being in the present moment and a great way to relieve stress and anxiety.
On the 11th day of Christmas…
Always use the approved CE marked chargers for your rechargeable equipment, for devices such as e-cigarettes, phones, tablets and plug-in rechargeable battery kits. Devices can become hot when charging so place them in an appropriate place, away from flammable items.
On the 12th day of Christmas…
You must test your smoke alarms regularly to make sure they are working. Make sure you have the correct batteries ready for Christmas gifts, do not remove them from your alarms.
If you or others are in immediate danger and require the services of the Police, Fire Services or Ambulance you must always call 999.
