Mrs P is over £25,000 better off each year after being supported by the Trivallis Money Advice Team.
Mrs P was talking with her Rent Account Manager who noticed that she was due to turn state pension age in the upcoming months. They discussed the process of applying and found out that Mrs P had not received the code that she needed to begin her application.
Mrs P was referred to Sue Hoskins, Money Advice Officer at Trivallis who was able to help. Sue said: “I first began supporting Mrs P when we noticed that she needed help applying for her pension. I got the code that she needed and helped start her application.
“From there, I invited Mrs P down to one of the Money Advice drop-ins we were holding in one of the local sheltered schemes so that I could help further.”
Mrs P explained: “I had so many letters and I didn’t want to ask for help because I felt silly , I was really struggling to understand what they all meant. I took the letters along with me to meet Sue and she explained everything that I needed to know. She had a great way of explaining it without making me feel like I was dull.”
Once the pension application had been complete, Sue then carried out a benefit check to see what other support Mrs P was entitled to.
Sue explains: “We carried out a benefit check and discovered that Mrs P was entitled to other financial support including state pension credit, housing benefit, a reduction in her council tax, support with her water bill through the Help U tariff and more.
“In total, we managed to find an incredible £25,537.75 worth of additional income and savings for Mrs P on an annual basis!”
Mrs P was very thankful for the support that she received from the team, especially Sue.
Mrs P explained: “I am really grateful for Sue for helping me and making a difference to my life. Not only financially but mentally, as I was struggling to know where to get help. It didn’t matter what question I had; she was able to help.
“For people like me, we often get left behind. I only have access to my landline and a small mobile phone, I don’t have any access to the internet so I’m not online. The only thing on a line is my washing!
“I’m so grateful that there is help at the other end of the phone and when Trivallis says that they will call you back, they do. For anyone else like me that is struggling, pick up the phone and ask for help because there is someone out there willing to help you. Don’t be afraid, you just need to ask.”
Sue said: “It’s so nice for me to see the difference that I was able to make, it gave me great job satisfaction knowing that I had made such an impact on Mrs P’s life and that I was able to relieve some of her mental and financial stress.
“I still have regular contact with Mrs P, providing ongoing support and also, she recently popped into the office with a card and some chocolates to say thank you.”
“I will say that Mrs P is a rare case, we can’t promise to find that much money for everyone, as much as we would love to. But every little helps in the current situation so just like Mrs P did, I would encourage everyone to access the support that is available. You have nothing to lose by doing so, but perhaps a lot to gain both financially and emotionally.
