Fun In The Sun - On A Budget

It can be difficult to keep the kids entertained over the summer holidays, especially when money is a little tight.

But there are so many ways that you and your family can have fun without breaking the bank. We have come up with some fun activities that you and your family can do that won’t cost you a penny (and you probably already have everything you need in your cupboards!)

Swimming at RCT Leisure Centres – School Holidays

Beat the holiday boredom with free leisure access at any of RCT Leisure for Life leisure centres during every school holiday. Under 16s and accompanying carers can enjoy free swimming across RCT.

Find your local Leisure for Life centre here: www.rctcbc.gov.uk/EN/Resident/SportsandLeisure/LeisureCentres

Taff Trail

Make the most of the nature that is on your doorstep and explore the infamous Taff Trail. 55 miles of tracks that meander through RCT and Cardiff, you can walk, cycle, or run the trail and discover the great outdoors near you.

For information on the trail, visit: www.mytafftrail.co.uk/index

Slip ‘n’ Slide

Have some spare washing up liquid? Let the kids go wild and create a DIY slip ‘n’ slide on a sunny day. Tarpaulin makes a great base to slide down a hill, but the grass works just as well! Just find a safe space with a hill, and get sliding!

Book Swap

If you have a spare book that you have already read, why not start a book swap with a friend? You can share your favourite stories and read new ones too, all at no cost. There is nothing more relaxing than reading outside on a summer’s day.

 Become an expert star gazer

Summer is the perfect time to learn all about the night sky. It is best do some research before you stargaze so that you know what it is you are looking at; read about the constellations, their names, and what they look like. Pick an evening where the skies will be clear, sit back, and enjoy the wonder of the stars above. Visit Wales has a handy list of some of the best stargazing spots across Wales, here.

Create a new sport

This is a great time to get creative with your friends and invent a new sport! You could combine the skills of rugby with the rules of tennis, or play football with a balloon. Whatever you think of, give it a go and get your friends involved too!

Fancy something more organised? Sport RCT has a handy list of community sports happening across the valleys, here: Get Active (rctcbc.gov.uk)

You can find more great activities on our Time For Summer Hub, so head here to check them out.
