Gerwyn’s able to look forward to the future thanks to ‘life changing’ support

A man from Trebanog has completely turned his life around following support from teams at Trivallis.   

Gerwyn Rhys moved to Trebanog in the Rhondda Valleys two years ago, after facing eviction from a home he simply could not afford.

A divorce from his wife left him saddled with debt and struggling with mental health. As bills stacked up he was struggling to pay his rent.

He said: “I was in a really dark place when I lived in Trebanog, I’d been facing eviction where I lived before so I thought this would be a fresh start.

“When me and my ex-wife divorced and she took the kids to live in America, I hit rock bottom. My bad mental health means there were days when I would sit on the end of my bed crying, not wanting to face the world. I really didn’t want to be here anymore and was so embarrassed; but then something changed.”

Gerwyn was referred onto Trivallis’ money saving team because of his rent arrears. Through this referral, Gerwyn was given advice on setting up a payment plan for his rent.

Gerwyn Rees, supported by Trivallis' STEPS team Support for Gerwyn is now on-going from Trivallis’ STEPS team, who help tenants who may need extra support to stay in their home.

Gerwyn added: “When I met John from the STEPS team I finally felt like there was a light at the end of the tunnel. He helped me to register with a local doctor and I’m now receiving much needed help for my mental health and I’m in the process of setting up a payment plan that will help me pay off my debts in a more manageable way.”

John Thomas, STEPS tenancy support officer at Trivallis, said: “At Trivallis we recognise that there may be times when our customers don’t feel they can cope with looking after their home, tenancy, money or day to day life in general. Our free and confidential STEPS Service provides advice to those who may need extra support to stay in their home, with advice on things like welfare and housing.

“Gerwyn was at a really low point when I first met him and it’s been a real team effort to get him back on his feet, coupled with a lot of determination on his part. Adam from our lettings team has given us a lot of guidance and now Gerwyn has a new, more suitable home to move in to.”

Gerwyn is in the process of moving into his new home, he said: “I’m on cloud nine and love my new home. It means that my bills are more manageable now and I can slowly get my life back on track, this is the fresh start I was looking for. Trivallis’ TEC team has helped me move some of my stuff from my old home into my new one and I just feel like they’ve gone the extra mile to help me out.

“My new outlook on life has given me confidence to get back in touch with some of my children and have met my two grandsons for the first time. The support has been truly life changing.”
