Porth Families Swap Fortnite for Fresh Air

Families from Porth took part in an Easter event to mark the progress of new homes being developed in the area.

The free event was hosted by social landlord Trivallis, WRW Construction and AFC Porth and involved an Easter egg hunt and games for young people.

Easter Eggs in Porth Gerrard brought his son Harvey along and said: “It’s great to see free events like this available for families in the Easter holidays as it can be quite an expensive time.

“So many young people sit in front of their game consoles playing Fortnite these days, so on a sunny day there’s no better opportunity to get them out and about. Harvey really enjoyed himself running around and found lots of chocolate eggs."

Easter eggs were donated by WRW Construction, the organisation that is supporting Trivallis to develop 14 new, affordable homes in Appletree Avenue.

The development is a £1.4million investment in the area, which is funded by the Welsh Government Social Housing Grant and comprises of 12 one-bedroom flats and 2 two-bedroom flats.

The homes, which are due for completion in early 2020 will be split into two areas; a northern block will be made up of four two-storey buildings, with one flat per floor. The southern block will be made up of three linked two-storey buildings with an L-shaped layout, with one one-bed flat per floor; each flat will have its own access.

Layla, aged nine, took part in the event and said: “This is the first time I’ve done an Easter egg hunt and I’ve been really excited. I found lots of eggs and even won the egg and spoon race. Today has been lots of fun and I like having things like this close to where I live.”

CGI of the new development in Appletree Avenue Lisa Roberts, community projects officer at Trivallis, said: “It was great to see so many families out enjoying themselves in Porth. We wanted to say thank you to people in the area for their co-operation as we work to develop new homes. In 2015, we consulted with people who lived in Appletree Avenue in Dinas on what we could do to improve the area. We’ve worked with local people and are investing in the community by delivering these much needed affordable new homes.”

Trivallis ‘dominates’ Regional Sheltered Housing Awards

Each year, the Elderly Accommodation Counsel (EAC) celebrates successful examples of sheltered housing across the UK.

Trivallis manages 23 sheltered housing schemes throughout Rhondda Cynon Taff, where residents aged 60 years and over live completely independently in their own flats or bungalows but share some communal areas and social activities.

This year, in Wales, over 1,000 residents, visitors, volunteers and staff shared their opinions of the schemes where they live and work with the EAC for its 2019 awards.

Trivallis picked up 11 of the 18 awards available in Wales, including joint gold awards for ‘retirement housing under 25 units’ for Blaengwawr Close in Aberdare and Nebo in Ystrad and a gold award for ‘retirement housing 37-43 units’ for David’s Court in Pontyclun.

Judges feedback on the awards said: “Trivalllis dominates the Retirement Housing category awards... thanks to all their residents, visitors and staff for expressing their views.”

Blaengwawr Close has been selected for the National Awards, which take place in Manchester this May competing with housing providers across the UK.

Merlin Baker lives in one of Trivallis’ sheltered schemes, he said: “A lot of people are under the misconception that sheltered accommodation is like living in an ‘old people’s home’ and we just sit in a lounge drinking tea all day; that couldn’t be further from the truth.

“You’ve got your own independence. There are social groups that go on trips and plan activities like meals out, if you want to get involved in that sort of thing.  I feel like I’m living in a community within a community, my flat is ideal for me and I’d recommend sheltered accommodation to anybody.”

As well as the EAC awards, Trivallis has three times received accreditation from the Centre for Housing and Support, confirming that its sheltered housing service meets nationally recognised best practice standards.

21 of Trivallis’ Sheltered Schemes are also accredited with either gold or platinum ‘Visibly Better’ standards by the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) In Wales. To obtain these standards, Trivallis must meet criteria focussing on different aspects of accessibility for people with sight loss who live in and visit the schemes.

Rena Karadogan, Head of Care and Support at Trivallis, said: "We’re delighted that people value our sheltered accommodation and to be recognised for the services we provide for older people."

Emma’s ‘Super Mam’ gets a well-deserved treat

Super Mam Competition Winner

We know that not all heroes wear capes and this Mother’s Day we wanted to give our customers the opportunity to nominate their ‘Super Mam’ for the chance to win a special treat.

Thanks to a kind donation from Llechwen Hall Hotel, we offered Afternoon Tea for two on Mother’s Day for one lucky customer, who nominated their mam or mother figure.

Emma Thomas, a Trivallis customer, was chosen as the winning entry. Emma nominated her mam, Jenny, saying: “My mother has helped me so much over the past few months even though she’s not in great health herself - she doesn’t get out much anymore and completely deserves this afternoon tea treat as to me she is my hero and without her help and support I would not be where I am now”.

Super Mam Winner PictureWhen Jenny found out that she and Emma had been selected as the winners of the competition she got quite emotional, saying: “This is a really lovely surprise. Being disabled, I don’t tend to get out much so this will be a real treat for me. I’m so grateful that Emma nominated me as we’ve had a tough few months but have helped each-other get through.”

Emma and Jenny were treated to a selection of sandwiches and cakes on Mother’s Day at the hotel, which is based in Llanfabon, just outside of Pontypridd. They enjoyed it so much that they’ve booked to go back soon for Sunday Lunch.

Emma said: “The afternoon tea was stunning and it was nice to get Mam out of the house as I had been trying so hard. This really did the job and we had a lovely day.”
